The Beauty and the Beast show Paris 2014 should not be missed
Appearances can be deceptive, and nowhere is this truism more poignantly illustrated than in the timeless tale of La Belle et la Bête, a traditional French fairy tale which was first committed to print in the 18th century. A superb version of the classic tale was made into a movie by the great Jean Cocteau in 1946. On the other side of the Atlantic, Disney Studios had been toying with the idea of making an animated version of the story since the 30s, but didn’t get around to making it until half a century later. The Beauty and the Beast was released in 1991 and the score, featuring music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, won an Academy Award.
Building on the success of the film and its wonderful score, seven new songs were added when the film was adapted into a Broadway musical in 1994, the first Disney movie to be so honoured. The musical was also a huge success, going on to become the eighth longest running Broadway production of all time, notching up nearly five and a half thousand performances before it closed in 2007. Versions of what has become a classic musical have been seen by an estimated 35 million people worldwide, and now, at last, The Beauty and the Beast has returned to the story’s country of origin with a stunningly staged and spectacular new 2 ½ hour production which has to be seen to be believed.
