Orsay Museum best hotels for your convenience
The Orsay railway station was built at the very end of the 19th century for the 1900 Universal Exhibition. This masterpiece of Beaux Arts industrial architecture was to have a sadly short life fulfilling its original purpose as by the late 1930s its platforms were too short for the modern trains. After serving in various capacities, the station was declared a National Monument in 1978 and was inaugurated as a museum in 1986.
It took around six months to install over 3000 paintings, sculptures and other items. Today this magnificent building, over 175 metres in length, is organised on three levels and holds the largest collection of Impressionist masterpieces in the world, along with examples of Art Nouveau, Beaux Arts, Naturalism, and Postimpressionism. Over 3 million visitors a year come to admire the works of Gauguin, Van Gogh, Renoir, Monet and so many other masters. Clearly the tale of this wonderful building has reached a happy conclusion.
A current temporary exhibition at the Orsay which should not be missed is dedicated to the illustrative genius of Gustave Doré. A professional illustrator from his mid teens, Doré created stunning work in a variety of media and various genres and excelled in them all. He illustrated many great works of literature, including his masterpiece, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner.
