The Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) is a prestigious and essential establishment dating back nearly twelve centuries and is the institution that bears the considerable responsibility of manufacturing the French national currency. Housed in a magnificent 18th century building on the prestigious Quai Conti, it also hosts many cultural events. Here’s an overview of this summer's programme... all taking place just a ten-minute walk from the Hotel du Danube.
The magic of candlelight
On July 30th and 31st the magnificent main courtyard of the Monnaie de Paris will host a concert event: Candlelight. Adding to the experience of live music, the enchanting illumination provided by thousands of candles confers a unique and multisensory atmosphere. This series of concerts pays tribute to the British rock band Queen. The arrangements of the band’s material for classical instruments gives new depth and charm to these ultra-famous songs. Remember to book as soon as possible on the Monnaie de Paris website.
Currencies and Wonders: an intriguing look into the world of money
During the summer and until September 25th, the Monnaie de Paris also hosts an exciting exhibition entitled Currencies and Wonders. Taking the visitor on a journey through time and across the world, this exhibition reveals the myriad forms and uses of money at various periods of history and by various cultures. With around 200 artifacts from museums around the world and from private collections, this exhibition traces this commercial link between peoples and offers a fascinating and revelatory look at a medium of exchange we often take for granted.
La Monnaie de Paris is open to the public for permanent and temporary exhibitions and cultural events. This summer, the programme promises to be particularly enticing and exciting. Make the most of it during your summer break at the nearby Hotel du Danube.
