Rodin Flesh and Marble : what more evocative title could there be to express the great sculptor's amazing ability for suggesting the human form and the emotions it conveys? This is the wonderfully apt name chosen for an exhibition of the works of the artist, along with that of his pupil and muse Camille Claudel, which runs until the 1st September at the world famous Rodin Museum, just over a mile from the Hotel du Danube. Rodin Flesh and Marble: an exhibition not to be missed
Rodin Flesh and Marble : Over sixty statues and preparatory studies will be on display, many of which are rarely seen as they belong to private collections. Opened in 1919, the Rodin Museum incorporates two sites; the sculptor's former home at Meudon and the Hotel Biron, a listed historical monument where the permanent collection is housed, and where this Rodin's works exhibition is taken place.
The French sculptor Auguste Rodin was noted for his powerfully realistic work, which expressed character and emotion. The Thinker and The Kiss are probably his most renowned works. Marble is thought to bear a resemblance to flesh and so has from classical antiquity been a favoured medium for representing the human form. Rodin had a special affinity with marble which is fascinatingly highlighted in Rodin Flesh and Marble. He gave life to cold stone and his genius deserves to be celebrated and, in the exquisite surroundings of this beautiful mansion and its gardens which Rodin used as his workshop from 1908, it is celebrated to perfection.
The sculptor donated his works to the French state on the condition that this building be turned into a museum, and the result has become one of the most popular museums in France.
